Previewed is a look into the cover art from MGMT’s upcoming album release “Congratulations,” due out in stores April 13th, 2010. The art was done by famed surrealist cartoonist Anthony Ausgang, interviewed below courtesy of Daniel Lahoda from JetSetGraffiti.

You are one of the original “Lowbrow” guys and have watched the whole arc of this movement. What are your thoughts on how the scene has evolved?

Lowbrow Art was originally based on a wide assortment of aesthetic insurgencies, like the surf and hotrod subculture. Many of those cultural influences are now outdated and have been replaced by more recent stimulations. For example, the major influence that Saturday morning cartoons had on Lowbrow has been replaced by the new youth culture’s video and computer games. There were also certain orphaned subcultures that were initially attracted to Lowbrow as a good place to enter the Fine Art world. As time passed some of these subcultures, like Graffiti, moved away from the Lowbrow and became their own art movements.

How did you get hooked up with MGMT?

I met Andrew and Ben from MGMT through the experimental musician Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum, for whom I had done album cover art in the past. MGMT was recording “Congratulations” at a mansion in Malibu so I went there a couple of times to hang out and watch the process unfold. Not being a musician I was occasionally left to my own devices so I would sit around and draw on pieces of paper then leave them there when I went home. I got along well with the band and gave them copies of my book, Vacation From Reality. Later, Josh Cheuse, the art director from Sony, contacted me once the recording was finished. The most important thing was that MGMT wanted the “look” of my style of painting and gave me only a few points that I had to hit. Naturally the process took some time but they were always cool with the criticisms. A lot of people who commission a painting only know what they don’t want; fortunately MGMT knew what they wanted and let me do it my way

Air Jordan 5 “Toro Bravo” Pack

The latest Air Jordan multi-shoe pack will release late this month month under the theme of “Toro Bravo”. Featuring two versions of the Air Jordan V, the shoe is inspired by a special and heralded species of bull which is bred for the Running of the Bulls event in Pamplona, Spain. The black version is inspired by “both the Toro Bravo, known for its aggressiveness, strength, vigor and intelligence, and Michael Jordan’s basketball career, which exemplified these qualities and more.” On the other hand the red version “represents the passion, inspired by MJ’s drive for the game and taking its color from the red bandannas runners in Pamplona wear.” A special custom-box set featuring the menacing eyes of a red-eye’d pull peering through a crate keeps in line with the shoe’s concept at hand. The Toro Bravo pack is set for a May 30th release.

A cylindrical piston. A vertical back-and-forth movement. Liquid. These were the three essential elements combined by the C Lab Series to create this astounding equation involving mechanics and chemistry.

Traditional design and display codes have been demolished to make way for a mobile glass column, located between 12 and 1 o'clock, which serves as the power reserve with a vertical indicator. On the chemistry side of things, a liquid featuring green phosphorescent nanoparticles fills a tube to assist in the reading. Meanwhile, on the mechanical side, this energy gauge operates perpendicularly to the caliber, rising up and down from its base to signal the remaining energy of the movement in relation to its available three-day power reserve. Its graduated outline corresponds to level indicators, which are secured to the inner surface of the watch.

Originally scheduled to release back in 2006 as a Team Manager Series SB, Nike reportedly scrapped their plans for a “Gucci” themed Dunk High due to several complications within the participating skate camps. With less than 30 pairs in existence, they’ve quickly become one of pricier SB’s on the market. Three years later, it seems like Nike SB will finally release these beauties to select SB accounts, tagging them as a premium quickstrike drop. A release is expected in the fourth quarter of 2009. Lacoste’s Crocodile Mythologies collection continues with a look into a new Missouri model and two different colorways in their Revan, paying tribute to crocodile mythologies of the US and South Africa. Following a South African myth, the Missouri features inspiration by the Albino alligator which is known as the god of fertility within the Venda people of South Africa. The kicks combine a medley of premium materials with all-white tonal uppers accented with details reminiscent of the Venda tribes. The two pairs of Revans follow myths based around New York City as the kicks pay tribute to both the NYPD uniforms and the cities legendary taxi cabs.
